The Challenge

Implenia AG, the leading construction and real estate service provider from Switzerland, faced a fragmented intranet landscape that made it difficult for employees to find relevant information. Many contents were hard to access due to an unclear structure, which significantly impaired the acceptance of the intranet. The challenge was to create a user-friendly and personalized platform that provides all relevant information from external and internal sources, simplifies communication, and makes daily work more efficient. This situation is common in many growing organizations where information systems evolve organically without strategic direction, eventually creating barriers to effective internal communication.

The Vision

Our vision was to make the intranet a digital home for employees - a platform that not only serves as a central source of information but also supports daily work and promotes internal networking. The goal was a user-centered solution that meets the individual needs of employees and offers an intuitive user interface. The platform should be personalized, flexible, and efficient, and achieve high acceptance through the active participation of employees during an extensive testing phase. This approach recognizes that modern intranets must go beyond mere information repositories to become true digital workplaces that enhance collaboration and productivity.

The Implementation

TYPO3 & Microsoft SharePoint: A Great Team for High Intranet Requirements

To achieve this goal, we developed a customized intranet dashboard based on the CMS TYPO3 and the JavaScript framework vue.js. The system was seamlessly integrated with Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Azure to create a central, scalable, and secure information and communication platform. Through the modular widget architecture, we achieved high flexibility: employees can customize their dashboard by selecting and adding widgets from a widget store and further adapting them to their personal interests and professional needs. This technical architecture combines the content management strengths of TYPO3 with the collaboration capabilities of Microsofts ecosystem, creating a solution greater than the sum of its parts.

Beta Test with Added Value: How Employees Optimize the New Homepage

A special focus was on user-centricity: the introduced toggle switch to the beta instance allowed users to test the new homepage early and provide active feedback. In the period from October 2023 to the end of March 2024, qualitative feedback was collected, which led to continuous optimization of the system. A quantitative survey showed an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars regarding the user experience, which demonstrates the high acceptance of the new solution. This co-creation approach ensured that the final product truly addressed user needs while building ownership and engagement among employees before the official launch.

Agile to Success: What Scrum Brought to Our Project

The agile development method according to the Scrum framework made it possible to react flexibly to user feedback and new requirements. In two-week sprints, the system was continuously optimized and expanded, which promoted a smooth transition to the new platform and contributed to the improvement of the user experience during development. The modular widget architecture also makes it possible to implement new features easily and quickly and to solve upcoming challenges. By embracing agility, the development team could respond to emerging requirements and shifting priorities, ensuring the solution remained aligned with business needs throughout the development lifecycle.

Works for Us: Accompanying Communication for the Go Live

The go-live of the new intranet dashboard was accompanied by a comprehensive campaign that was broadcast on all internal platforms. The accompanying communication - from conception to implementation - was created entirely in our Heilbronn film and VR studio. In the specially produced introduction video, the Product Owner announced the new platform, supported by employees who had already actively participated in the beta phase. They shared their experiences and presented their favorite widgets that make their daily work easier. Thus, we not only provided the technology but also told the story of the new intranet homepage vividly. This communication strategy recognized that successful digital transformation requires both technical excellence and effective change management to drive adoption.

The Result

Thanks to the specialists from LINGNER.COM, the new solution satisfies all the needs of the Swiss corporation. Personalization? Check! Efficient use? Yes! Unconditional Implenia branding? No problem! Security? Absolutely! A new homepage with smart functions in the look and feel of the construction group has been created. Hand in hand, the data from the Microsoft world is presented together with that of the content management system TYPO3. This creates a piece of individuality for our customer with an "out-of-the-box" intranet solution like SharePoint.
